White oak Options
There are 2 main types of oak you’ll see in woodworking. White oak, and Red oak. Red oak is that “golden” oak look you often see in builder grade homes from the 80 and 90’s. White is what is been popular more recently and you’ll see it featured in popular design magazines and such.
But it’s important to understand, it’s not just the type of oak, but the type of cut that matters.
Below are the 3 main types, with rift-sawn generally being the more expensive option. It has a much more uniform look and consists of mostly straight lines.
Plain sawn is good for a more rustic look, and quarter sawn gets you somewhere in the middle between the two; more cohesive look than plain sawn, but not as much as Rift sawn.
